AMPS RESPONDS TO FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN TSI SNAIHNE
On July 6, 2025, at approximately 5:56 p.m., the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) responded to a call from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police regarding a single-vehicle motorcycle accident near River Road in the District of Tsi Snaihne (Snye), Akwesasne, Quebec.
A section of River Road was temporarily closed as emergency crews responded. Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) arrived on scene and provided emergency care. Despite their efforts, the individual involved in the accident was unresponsive and vital signs were absent.
The driver, identified as 55-year-old Louis Steven Oakes, was located off the roadway with fatal injuries. It was confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was transported to Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown, Quebec, where he was officially pronounced deceased. Next of kin have been notified.
Witnesses confirmed that Mr. Oakes was the sole operator of the motorcycle and was traveling westbound on River Road. No other vehicles were involved. Initial indicators suggest that speed may have been a contributing factor in the collision.
The scene was examined by an AMPS Forensic Identification Officer, and in consultation with the Sûreté du Québec Accident Reconstruction Unit, the site was cleared. Tribal Police and HAVFD assisted with traffic control. The investigation remains ongoing, and AMPS is awaiting the Coroner’s Report for further details.
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service extends heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Oakes during this difficult time.
