CANOES, CULTURE, AND COUNCIL: MCA VISITS THOMPSON ISLAND
On June 2, members of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne spent the day at Thompson Island Cultural Camp — reconnecting with our land, culture, and one another.
The day was filled with meaningful activities and teachings, all made possible by our incredible MCA programs and staff. From paddling the shores of Thompson Island to learning about land rights and practicing mindfulness, each part of the day reminded us of the importance of community, balance, and cultural identity.
Council took part in a canoe journey around the island, led by Brandon David of Akwesasne Child & Family Services, offering a powerful way to reflect on the significance of traditional water travel.
Cheyenne Lazore and Braydon White of the Akwesasne Rights & Research Office gave an engaging presentation on land protection and sovereignty, highlighting the work being done to uphold our rights and stories.
To close out the day, Mary Terrance of the Department of Health guided everyone through mindfulness exercises, encouraging self-reflection and wellness — an important piece of strong leadership and community care.
Big nia:wen to the Thompson Island Cultural Camp team for welcoming us, and to all of the MCA staff who helped create such a meaningful and well-organized day. Your dedication to sharing culture and building connections is what makes our programs so special!
