SUPPORT EFFORTS UNDERWAY FOR SANDY LAKE FAMILIES

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is extending its full support to over 375 evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation who have arrived at the Devcore Centre in Cornwall due to the ongoing wildfire emergency in Northern Ontario.

The City of Cornwall, the Canadian Red Cross, and other key partners have activated a coordinated response to provide shelter, medical care, and wellness services at the Devcore Centre. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne remains committed to working alongside these partners to ensure evacuees are welcomed in a safe and supportive environment.

“We appreciate Cornwall opening their doors to the evacuees,” said MCA Grand Chief Leonard Lazore. “We understand how difficult it is to leave your home behind. Akwesasne is here to offer a welcoming hand and a connection to community during this challenging time. These are our relatives, and we stand with them.”

The MCA’s Emergency Measures Program is on-site providing key logistical coordination, recreational programming, and assistance in meeting day-to-day needs. Staff are working closely with partners to ensure evacuees feel supported, respected, and comfortable during their stay.

“We are here to make sure families from Sandy Lake feel cared for in a way that honours who they are and what they’ve been through,” said MCA A/Executive Director Shannon Roundpoint. “This response is a true collaboration and we are proud to stand alongside our partners to provide meaningful, respectful support.”

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne extends its thoughts and continued support to the entire Sandy Lake community. MCA staff will remain involved throughout evacuation period and will share updates with the community as needed.
