ADDICTION SERVICES ANNOUNCES NEW PARENTS OF ADDICTED LOVED ONES (PAL) SUPPORT GROUP
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Addiction Services is announcing a new support group that will be launching: the Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL) Support Group. The support group will be meeting every Wednesday from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. starting September 25, 2024. The locations of each week’s meeting will rotate between the three northern districts.
PAL is a support group for parents, grandparents, and spouses of anyone with a substance use disorder. At this support group, participants can find hope and support through education, open discussion, and meeting others who are living a similar struggle.
PAL’s free weekly meetings follow evidence-based practices, and follows a curriculum designed specifically for parents by professionals in the treatment and recovery industry. Each meeting will include two important parts:
- An educational component that offers tools for participants to use, such as ways to help, rather than enable.
- A support component where participants interact with each other, sharing what has worked, and has not worked, for them in their communities.
What makes PAL unique is the evidence-based practices and the peer-to-peer support, where participants are encouraged to share their experiences with each other.
PAL meetings are open to all individuals aged 18 and older, regardless of faith or background, reflecting Addiction Services’ primary goal of offering education and resources for parents of loved ones dealing with substance use disorder.
