BEACH CLOSINGS COMMENT PERIOD

Join the MCA Environment Program on Thursday, October 6 for a hot dinner provided by the Snye Recreation Center and have your say about the health of local beaches in Akwesasne!

Background:

In 1987, the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall was named an Area of Concern under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement due to poor environmental conditions. A Remedial Action Plan was put in place to help clean up the Area of Concern. This plan outlines 14 Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs) (a technical term for high priority environmental issues), as well as their scientific criteria that need to be met to be considered “not impaired”. When all 14 BUIs meet their scientific criteria, the Area of Concern can be considered “restored”. There are currently 7 BUIs that still need to be addressed, this includes BUI #10 – Beach Closings.

A Beach Closings Beneficial Use Impairment Assessment Report indicates that all scientific criteria have been met for Charlottenburgh Park, Glengarry Park, 28 Akwesasne Beaches and other recreational areas.  The St. Lawrence River Restoration Council (SLRRC) is seeking your input on the recommendation to officially change the status of the Remedial Action Plan’s Beach Closings BUI #10 from an ‘impaired’ status to a ‘not impaired’ status.

Take this opportunity to voice your concerns and discuss beach health in-person. Please join us tonight from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Akwesasne Housing Authority located at 378 NY-37 A, Akwesasne, NY 13655, United States.

Dinner and prizes to be won!! We hope to see you there.
