COMMUNITY CONSULTATION TO BEGIN FOR BLOCK 1 LANDS

The Mohawks of Akwesasne have claims against Canada in connection with the Seaway and Power Project, which are the subject of legal proceedings filed in the Federal Court of Canada as Grand Chief Abram Benedict et al v. Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada et al.

In 2000, the Parties to the Seaway Proceedings agreed in principle to the “return or reconveyance” of certain lands on Kawehno:ke known as “Block 1 Lands,” in order to settle one specific issue in the Seaway Legal Proceedings. The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations added the Block 1 Lands to the reserve by Order dated November 25, 2020.

The Block 1 Lands consist of 108 parcels of land on Kawehno:ke in various areas around the Island indicated by the green and blue shaded areas, as well as the red railroad areas shown in the map below.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pleased to announce that it has approved a plan to begin the community consultation process regarding the allotment of parcels in the Block 1 Lands.

Beginning in October 2022, certain areas consisting of a limited number of parcels will be posted for public review and comment. Each posting will be up for a period of 30 days to allow community members the opportunity to review and comment on each area. There will be a total of 8 different areas posted over a six-month period.

Further information will be forthcoming at a later date.
