DRAFT AKWESASNE CANNABIS LAW ACCEPTED IN PRINCIPLE; MOVING TO COMMUNITY CONSULTATION PHASE

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has been working to develop a community cannabis law to regulate the cannabis after it was legalized by Canada in 2019.  The Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Procedural Regulation determines the steps for new laws to be developed.

On Sept. 20, 2022, Council accepted the Draft Akwesasne Cannabis Law› in principle, per Section 5.0 of the Regulation, “Phase II Acceptance in Principle of an Akwesasne Law.”  The next steps per the Regulation will be to present the summary of the law at the MCA General Meeting, followed by Phase III – Community Consultation.

The summary of the law will therefore be read at the MCA General Meeting taking place:

Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at 6 p.m.

Kawehno:ke Recreation Centre.

The meeting will also be streamed through Zoom.  Email meetings@akwesasne.ca to receive the meeting link.

During the presentation, Working Task Group representatives will be present to answer any technical questions.

The Phase III – Community Consultation will commence with information sessions and other opportunities for community input.
