The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne – Department of Technical Services is informing the community that the Public Consultation Meeting on Kawehno:ke Bridge Corridor Improvements has been scheduled to take place tomorrowWednesday, May 9, 2018. The meeting was previously scheduled to take place on May 7th and was postponed due to the passing of a Kawehno:ke community member. This meeting will take place at the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School (AMS) in the multi-purpose room between 6-8 p.m.

The meeting is being held to discuss updates on the Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) Bridge Corridor Improvements and resconstruction of the roadway, and to present information to the community, residents and adjacent property owners on the construction drawings planned. The drawings have been updated based on the last public meeting discussion. This is the final opportunity to obtain the public’s input on this project.

The project, developed by the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) is identified as Contract 5. The scope of work consists of improvements to International Road, from the Seaway International Bridge Corporation (SIBC) maintenance buildings to just past the crossroads to the old Customs site.

The drawings identify the reconstruction of the International Road with buried drainage system, the addition of turning lanes to local businesses and residents, construction of a local service road, installation of new roadway lighting and traffic lights at the main intersection. The project also includes upgrades to the surface of the existing recreational tennis court area.

FBCL has awarded a general contractor who has recently completed the removal of the existing fence and tree survey to the east side of the corridor. This company is scheduled to start the service road construction todayTuesday May 8, 2018. Construction delays, traffic re-routing, noise, and dust are anticipated.

We look forward to hearing from you.
