IAKHIHSOHTHA ELDERS RETURN TO WALMART

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, elders from the Iakhihsohtha Home for the Elderly attended Walmart in Cornwall for shopping. It was the first time the elders returned to the store for their routine trip after an incident there in July left them feeling unwelcome and unsafe.

Mohawk Council chiefs escorted the elders on their return trip, and management from the Cornwall store welcomed the group and apologized for their previous experience.

“Council is glad to see the residents of Iakhihsohtha enjoying themselves once again on their weekly shopping trip,” said Grand Chief Abram Benedict. “We wish to remind the public, in Akwesasne, Cornwall and everywhere, that elders are one of the most valuable treasures a community can have, and they have earned unconditional respect and kindness.”
