MCA EXTENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY OF JOYCE ECHAQUAN & MANAWAN COMMUNITY

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is saddened and disheartened to hear about the treatment of Joyce Echaquan, an Indigenous woman from the Atikamekw First Nation.

Leading up to her unfortunate death, Echaquan was treated horrifically and unacceptably while receiving services from nurses and staff from the Joliette Hospital. No individual should have to endure that type of behavior, especially in their last moments of life. In a hospital setting, you would expect to be met with professionalism and compassion; this degrading language should not be tolerated and no person should ever have to face this type of treatment. The language that was directed to Echaquan is something that was difficult to listen to. We hope that the investigation taking place brings justice to Joyce Echaquan.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to her family, friends, and community.
