MCA GENERAL ELECTION 2021: VOTER ELIGIBILITY & ADVANCED POLLS

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Chief Electoral Officer has provided the list of official candidates for MCA’s 2021 General Election.

Please be reminded that Advanced Polls can be completed from June 6 – June 19 by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call the Chief Electoral Officer at 613-575-5000 ext. 2406.

Criteria to be an Eligible Voter:  Akwesasne Election Law – Section 7 (Eligibility of Voters)

A person who at the time of voting must:

(a) have attained eighteen years of age;
(b) be a resident in the district where they are voting;
(c) be a registered member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne;
(d) be an Onkewhonwe.

For the purpose of the Akwesasne Election Law, “Onkwehonwe” is defined as a person:

  • who is registered in the Akwesasne Membership list; and

  • whose mother or father is/has been registered on the Akwesasne or any other First Nation Membership list. 

To register to vote, community members must complete an application and submit it to Chief Electoral Officer Leona Benedict at the Akwesasne Justice Department.  

MCA also encourages individuals who will be 18 years old on the day of elections (June 26, 2021) to register. Reminder: No additions/deletions or revisions will be made to the Voters List after Thursday, June 24 at 9 a.m.
