ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM UPDATE

The MCA Environment Program would like to inform the community that while our offices are closed to the public, we remain operational on a work-from-home basis. Environment is available Monday – Friday (8 AM – 5 PM) and can be contacted at:

The program continues to conduct environmental assessments and develop research projects to address community concerns. Current projects include the: Akwesasne Wetland Project – Phase 2; Fish Contaminate Study; Fish Consumption Research Study; Holistic Health Climate Change Study; Flooding Mitigation Study; Area of Concern within the Northern Portion of Akwesasne; Akwesasne Water Warriors Project; River Rapport; and Liaise with the Canadian Coast Guard.

During previous restructuring within the organization, Environment was joined by the Conservation Program and united under the Department of Infrastructure & Housing. Conservation is operational; our officer continues to patrol Akwesasne’s lands/waters, respond to wildlife/animal incidents, and provide guidance on best practices for hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Any environmental requests can be directed to Abraham Francis, Acting Environment Program Manager, at abraham.francis@akwesasne.ca or at 613-360-8656.

Our program would also like to remind Akwesasronon of how Iethi’nistenha ohontsia (Mother Earth) can continue to help us throughout the pandemic, both physically and mentally: community members can stock up on some immune-boosting traditional medicines (like elderberry, cedar, etc.) and spend time in nature as a low-risk way to combat stress/anxiety.

Nia:wen for your understanding as we navigate through this turbulent time — stay safe and stay healthy.
