U.S. – CANADA BORDER CROSSING UPDATE

UPDATE ON US/CANADA BORDER CROSSING (March 19, 2020 at 5 p.m.)

As follow-up to the update that was provided on March 18, 2020, today on Thursday, March 19, 2020, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau announced that the restriction of crossing the Canadian/United States border only for essential travel will become effective beginning tomorrow, Friday, March 20, 2020, after 11:59 p.m. (12 a.m. Saturday).

This means that if any non-Akwesasronon attempts to cross the Canada/United States border for a non-essential reason, they will likely be denied access.

For Akwesasne community members, you are advised that proper identification is required at both ports of entry. This means that you should present Border Officers with your Certificate of Indian Status (INAC) “status card” when crossing the border for essential travel such as purchasing groceries; accessing postal, banking, or medical services; or to check on your elders.

We will continue to update the community as information is received.
