For Immediate Release:
Tsiothóhrha/December 30, 2020

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Dept. of Health is notifying the public that we have received confirmation from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) that six (6) of our residents at the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long Term Care Facility have tested positive for COVID-19.  The residents have been isolated and are being monitored closely.

In line with our infection prevention and control (IPAC) protocols, we are testing residents and staff in accordance with the guidance and direction of the EOHU.  We will continue to conduct weekly tests of all our staff members and residents.

All staff are required to participate in surveillance testing as directed by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

We are working closely with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Community Health Program, our medical director, the Ministry of Long Term Care, and we are following our Infection Prevention and Control policies.  Also, our enhanced infection prevention and control measures remain in place such as symptom screening our residents and team members a minimum of twice daily, terminal cleaning of high touch surfaces four times a day, ensuring that all our staff are wearing masks, face shields, and personal protective equipment, and revisiting our infection prevention and control protocols to ensure they are being strictly followed.

Visitor restrictions will remain in place at Tsiionkwanonhso:te, and we will continue to reassess and update the community.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform the community as well that planning for the COVID-19 vaccinations has started with anticipation of the first part of January to roll-out.  The Long Term Care homes residents and staff will be the first to be offered the vaccinations.
